Unhappy power window switch failure

my left rear window switch located near the gear shift isn't working. furthermore, it is not illuminating when i turn on my headlight switch. other switches are working fine and illuminating as well. When i use the switch on the door itself sitting in the back it functions properly. so the problem seems to be confined to just the switch itself. What should i do before i take this car to a mechanic?? could it be a fuse? or a lose connection? thanks

Could just be a loose connection. Remove the wood to access the switch.

Having just "overhauled" 3 window switches in my daughter's '87 300E, I must say that I found that there is not much that can go wrong and that they are easy to fix.

What I found is that the contacts had become dirty and in some minor pitting took place.

To fix:

1. Open the console (single screw under carpet at rear).
2. Remove switch; lift out
3. Carefully open by popping off top rocker with a small screwdriver. (held at hinge; be careful.. there are two small *****)
4. Clean contacts (fine file or paper if necessary) and other surfaces.
5. Reassemble. Like new!!

Pull up the rectangular carpet, it's a tight fit and slightly under the plastic surround. You'll see the two screws you need to remove. Then just pivot up that end up over the shifter. The other end is held by "hooks".

This occurs to me on switches that I seldom use. I just keep working them until the problem goes away.

Simple check for you switches is to take a good one out swap it with defective, then you'll see if the switch is gone. Right and left just has the top cover swapped, electrically they are identical. I "repaired" mine as one of the posters suggested. It worked for a few more weeks and then it was gone again.
