Auto windshield glass is relatively soft. If your fingernail catches the scratch, then it's deep and you're in trouble. There are glass polishing kits available, but they're meant more to get rid of haze or light sandblasting from the road. A glass specialist would be your best source of information.

Eastwood Company sells auto glass polishing kits but like Kestas says; if you can feel the scratch with a nail a pro should tackle it or better yet have your insurance carrier replace your windshield (that's if you have the glass replacement coverage).

I've used the Eastwood kit before on a deep side window scratch; it worked but took me probably 12 hours total to get it right. I vowed never to do it again...a royal PITA, and the cerium oxide slurry makes a huge mess.

If your original windshield has been in the car for many miles (100.000?!?) then its time to replace it. THe polishing thing does not get you too far. What I observed for my high milage cars is when I had the windshields replaced by a non MB brand auto glass ( because it did cost less) they dont last as long as the original MB windshields. Next time I'm going to use MB parts only. Never forget a windshield is a safety relevant part, especially during rain and snow. Scratches dont let the wipers clean properly, so rather than fiddling around with polish get them replaced. Dont you have a glass insurance at a decent deductable??? And there is so much gravel flying around on the highways.:-)
