1989 260E not starting...
Hello.... Just joined the group.... but I have been reading the forums for a couple of months now.
I went half's on this car with my son (1989 MB 260E with under 200 kms)
The car recently stopped starting..... will turn over and rumble to life for a couple of seconds....and you have to turn the car to the off position the start it again only to the same results.
When we got the car I changed spark plugs(NOS),wires, rotor and distributor . New fuel pump relay , battery , fixed ovp relay and new regulator in alternator. Also new serpentine belt and used tenser as mine was just spinning.
I even adjusted the EHA just a 1/4 turn yesterday to see if it would help...no help.(and yes I got sprayed on...noob)
Duty Cycle... I get a reading of 30.8 before turning over the engine and after it reads 60.8 ..... so could the engine temp sensor cause the engine not to run?
Any Help/ideas ?
Here in Alberta those with learners lic's have to wait a year before going for there Drivers lic. and the car will be my son's after that...but he's losing faith in the car. Money is tight as we all know so it's a DIY project.... just racking my brain so any help please.

Graham yes the tempo sensor could send a message to the ecu to say it was up to temp and set injection to run lean so it will stop. Check Can you join up pins no 7 and 8 on fuel relay ? to get it to start but dont let it run to long with it bridged as it will put fuel in to engine after it stops. Also check all earth points clean them up .turn fuses in their holders .Check for vacumm leaks on pipe and rubber conectors. I will send PM you a workshop manual that will help .

Alright I'll google for it. In my other post I had some one come over.... he did jump those points and it did start... he said it could be the tach(hunting one down now).....so I'll look into a temp sensor. The car was acting up before it stopped running. when warm it would not start with out giving it gas to start,so when doing it now it just keeps cranking with no firing up... so again will look into a temp sensor.....
Thank-You for your help

jumping 7/8 (87/30)does start . It's been raining when I get home these last few days and it died at the front of the house and not in the garage ....so have to wait for a break.
yes I bookmarked the shop manual... I'll just clean all the grounds in the engine bay before anything else.

Well I build another blink code reader(1st one died and this time I got the right parts) Before the rain and hail started again I got the following :
3 blinks .... coolant temp sensor
5 " .... Oxygen sensor
6 " ..... Not assigned
9 " ..... Electric actuator
10 " .... ThrottleValve switch/idle speed contact
repeated
So they don't have the coolant sensor here so I'll have to get one from Pelican or Rock. I did waste to little sunshine we had at a yard only to find out they entered the wrong model of mb 300e that they had( want to test it before I tested my own).
Oxygen sensor I had cleaned before.... so leaving it for now .
My wife is home for the weekend before returning to the hospital for treatment on Monday night (Long weekend here) so just trying to make mama happy.

Graham yes there are 2 types ,one round with 4 contacts in and a one with 2 contacts green nothing like one another , i think the later one is like mine...so yours has a cat in the pipe Start with one at a time ,like the sensor first. Then go from there. The temp sensor can play a big part with these other 4 items. Do make sure you orderd the right one .Because there are 2 ,one for temp guage in the console ..

Did you replace the wires? and put them back on distributor in right order. And with resistor less plugs .These engines dont like resistor plugs. Just check the wire locations out on distributor. This is 190e but the same engine.

Graham do use the wiki i sent it as lots of info on there...As for you car i am stuck like you This may be the temp sensor we will have to wait and see.Can you get some one to try and start while you look at the throttle plate ,you will see if its moving .As the throttle pedal is pushed down.Ther is also 2 small switches on the bowden cable [throttle cable] see if they are clicking or not .

Keep on it mate hope it solves the problem. In the mean time go and check all earth points you can find ,clean ,and grease, then put them back on . 90% of problems are bad earth .Then check all vacuum pipes and their rubber ellbows [joints] for splits. This is proventive maintenance .Thats after the dogs have licked you crazy. Also did you tyrn all the fuses in the fuse box.

You will find all ground locations in the manual under no - 24 electrical trouble shooting ground locations. I remember a friend , have his choke cable getting realy red hot when he started his car .The earth on the body was painted over, as the car was new ,the earth was not making contact ,it earthed through the choke cable...thuse the red hot cable.
