Tires

Anyone have any recommendations on tires? Im looking to go 215/45/17. I currently use Michelin MXV4 Energy (205/60/15)
Basically looking for an H rated tire with decent tread wear rating.

Take a look at the Continental ContiPremierContact at TireRack.

About a month ago I got them in the 215/45-17 size. H-rated and the treadwear is 600, an amazing number for that type of tire. Time will tell if they last. Ride is nice and quiet.

Everyone I talk to says Kuhmo's are the best band for the buck.

I agree that Kuhmos are a good value, BUT....

On any size / type of tire, look at the treadwear number. While these values are sometimes questionable, they should be indicative of relative tread life. Most high performance tires have soft (read fast wearing) compounds for better performance.

Also, I wanted a tire without a directional tread to make rotation easier to even out the wear.

It's all about compromises.... what are you looking for and what are you willing to pay?

One thing more to add....

Going to a larger rim diameter and lower profile tire WILL make the small bump (like expansion joints) ride more harsh. It is a simple matter of less sidewall height to act like its own spring.

BUT, steering will be more precise and the car will handle better.

Again.... compromises!!

Thanks for your replies guys.....

I want a tire that is in a similar price range as the Michelin MXV4 Energys (around $500US ?). Treadwear in the 400 range. I wish Michelin made this tire in the size I need, I have been really happy with them.

I checked out Tirerack's comparison between the ContiPremier Contact and the Kumho 711. Kumho is almost half the price, but the treadwear is not even close to the Continental. I also checked out the owner's survey and compared the two. It looks like the Continental wins hands down in almost every category except for price.

I'll check around at some tire stores and see what is out there.
I have heard Toyo's are good, but I don't know much about them.

Something to keep in mind with price comparisons is how much the shipping will be (from TireRack, for instance) and also the cost of mounting, balance and sometimes disposal.

I won't be buying them from the Tirerack. Im just going to buy them from a store here in Canada. That way I will get the lifetime road hazzard waranty and rotating/balancing as well. Plus I don't have to pay duties etc.....

Joe, how are your tires in terms of handling?
