huh?

Do you mean 1987?

If it is an 87, then yeah, it was the 300 TD Turbo (3.0 L inline 6)

Post a pic of your car.

I am not sure. I know here in North America, only a turbo diesel was offered in 1987 for the W124. Did your car come with an owner's manual?
If you can, post a pic of the car, and one of the engine compartment.

In '87 the W124 chassis came with a 6 cylinder turbo diesel as one of the engine choices so it's 99% the correct engine in your car.

Why don't you think it has a turbo?

I thought you had a US car, but if your in the UK you probally had several different engine choices.

If it says "TE" on the name badge on the tailgate that denotes a fuel injected petrol engine estate and it's had an engine swap or a badge swap.

If it says "TD" its a diesel estate with no turbo

I looked at a 250TD a while back which did not come with a turbo

Merc estate diesels usually have "Turbodiesel"on the right side of the tailgate when looked at from the rear if it has a turbo.

I'm pretty sure ther is a 300TD estate. Badging TE diesel no.

I don't know how but I think if you have the vin nr mercedes can tell you what the car should be exactly.

I'm now 100% that this car has had an engine swap looking under the hood.

A large amount of the wires are secured with non mercedes cable ties. Plus the rev counter is'ent working presumed disconnected and the cruise control presumed either not connected or not even fitted to the replacement engine.

I agree that the 300TE means 300 = 3ltr
T = Estate
E = Injection

As with my 280TE & 230TE.

This means that i have to rebadge the car - no probs.

What i now need to know is, where to find and what to look for to fix the rev counter and cruise control.

Also if anyone has any ideas on what would make a 3ltr D engine run slugish with long gear changes on the auto gear box.

which with probably have somthing to do with a sudden jolt forward every time it changes gear.

I will post pictures of the engine and exteriour in the next couple of days.

Don't know about the rev counter.

I would change the transmission fluid and filter first. As my dad always says " start with the cheapest option"

Keep us posted.

Thats a very good idea and i will have that done on monday morning.

Now as regarding the irregular running of the engine the main vacume pipe to the brake servo was loose, so now i've tightend it up problem No1 is solved.

The next problem is the main belt on the front of the engine has come off and as i have no workshop manual to tell me how to slacken off the tensioner i will have to wait for a dry day to slide under the car to find out how to sort this problem out. (oh to have use of a dry warm workshop.)

I have now realised there is a bolt missing holding for want of a better word the hydrolic shock absorber which is mounted on the top of the tensioning wheel so i have to get a new one, this i think could stop the engine from vibrating so much i hope.
