Stereo problem

I have a 1993 300E that has the following stereo problem/

The AM reception is fine. The FM reception has static "spikes" that happen intermittently - getting very annoying. Is this something that is repairable or do I need to get a new stereo?
If a new stereo is required, I'd like to replace the old cassette unit with a CD unit. Any recommendations? Go with replacement mercedes unit or after market brand?

I would definately recommend replace the head unit.

i currently have a Panasonic MP3 Player (CQDF583U). This running on its own (no amplifier) brought out the standard speakers best, i was impressed!! But i had to go the extra distance and make a custom speaker enclosure for 2 x 6x9"s and put them in place of the first aid kit... looks awesome.

I also installed to 15" subwoofers in the boot running off an amp.

In saying that, to get the best out of your standard speakers i would definately replace the head unit with atleast a 50W x 4 rating.

I had an '88 300E myself, and faced the same decision. It sounds like you don't want to spend tons of money, so I would say your best bet is to replace the stock head unit with a nice aftermarket CD player.

I had a Clarion ProAudio CD player, nothing super fancy, you can get them for less than 200 bucks. It has a multi-color display you can adjust so that the illumination matches the amber color of the switches and gauges.

You won't believe the difference between radio and a CD, even with the stock speakers.
