Console Cup Holder

Hi All!

One of the bigger annoyances (for me anyway) is the lack of truly functional cup holders for early cars. The common solution was to fit "fold-down" style units to the door panels, and they worked pretty well for holding a can of soda or small cup of coffee.

In search of a better solution I found someone making custom center console cup-holders for w123 cars, and he's located about 70-miles north of me.

I've been corresponding with him for several weeks and have sent him photos and measurements for the w124 console to enable him to make a proto-type for the w124.

Due to the number of w124 cars still on the road and the loyal following of us owners (My wife and I have 2); I thought that that there might be a interest in the w124 community for his product.

What do you think?

I have no affiliation with the person making these, though admittedly he has offered to give me one for helping him with the design details. I'm going drive my CE up to him this Sunday so that he can take all the measurements that he needs. For me it's about finding solutions to problems and improving the breed (our w124's).

Your thoughts and suggestions?

I'd be interested, provided the price point is realistic.

Seconded. My CE could use a cup holder for my coffee, I'd like to see what the price is.

According to his CL ad;

w123 Zebrawood (Zebrano) center console cup holder is $80.00 and Burlwood is $120.00 (plus $13.00 shipping. Shipping is priority mail through USPS with tracking).

I would guess that the w124 console cup holders would be the same.

The CL ad for the w123 cup holder is here --> https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/pts/6153694901.html

Cheers,

Chad

That's a fair price and I'd get one for sure. I'm in Los Angeles so I'd probably just pick it up. Seems like if he can find enough W123 owners to justify making them, he could find enough W124 people as well.

Update:

Janet and I drove the wagon (our '95 E320) up to Orange County to meet up with Stephan..

He's a SUPER NICE GUY! and he also produces a quality product (I saw several of his w123 cup holders). We gave him carte blanche (AKA "free will") to spend as much time as he needed to take measurements of the wagons center console area. The center storage compartment was still in the wagon when we got there.. after removing the 2-screws that affix it to the actual console I remembered why I don't care for the Mercedes w124 center console storage compartment.. It's a "junk-drawer"!

We left the TE's storage box with Stephan as he's thinking about designing a easily removable w124 console box cup holder insert for those w124 owners that want to keep the factory storage box and not have to hold their coffee cup between their knees..

Cheers!

Chad & Janet

I have a way of using a 1995 through 1999 Buick and Cadillac folding cupholder that folds up into the W124 "storage" type of armrest.

I got the idea from another forum member, and thanks go to him but no matter how much I search for that original post I can't find it to give him credit.

Anyways, it works like this video I put on Youtube below.. I can provide more details if this appeals to you guys. Some people won't like its location, etc...but that's all up to the individual.

There's another video from someone else I saw of a mod too, but your armrest would have to be up.
