How Reliable is the W124 Today? [OC - Video]

A couple weeks ago we were invited to review a 1988 300 E with AMG parts owned by a local enthusiast. I was excited to have the chance to see how the E-Class differed from the 560SEL we reviewed last year, considering they were the same model year.

Thanks in large part to this and other MB enthusiast forums, I think we were able to put together an accurate list of things to look for if someone's in the market for a W124 or curious to learn more about these cars.

Whenever we produce a video like this we hope that it ends up helping folks down the road when out to buy a car like this. We hope you enjoy our trip back to 1988 in this video!

One of the things to look out for when buying any used car is buying something that is not what it's being touted as. Case in point; "Reliable W124 Mercedes 300E "AMG"". The front spoiler appears to be Lorinser , rear bumper cover appears to be Zender, side-skirts; who knows.. The only thing that I see about the car that might be authentic AMG is the 3-pc "Duck-tail" spoiler. All in all; The car does appear to be a pretty decent w124.

Hmmmmm...

So, as W124's go, I take issue with

the "AMG" seat belt pad

the 600SEL style grill

the mix-n-match "aero" kit

the bad aftermarket headlights that have a curve at the inner upper corner, best meant to work with the integrated grill from the updated '94-'95 E320, not this older style

the big wanna-be Brabus chrome wheels

In other words, this car really has all the trimmings (read:cheap) that the car would be better off without.

It's not the way I'd personally own it, but the owner of this car is entitled to do whatever they want with it. We're still hoping to feature a couple other W124s over the next little while, those might be a little more OEM.

I completely agree. I voiced my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

We had the chance to film a 1995 E320 Convertible this past Friday, and I think the reception will be better than we had for this one. Aside from a little clip-on the dashboard and the Garmin GPS, that W124 was completely original, and in very good condition for a daily driven car. We'll be publishing that video on 17 July!
