Excessive fuel usage and black smoke from exhaust

At first the car wouldn't start immediately and it consumed more fuel than usual.
Eventually the consumption was 160 km on a 70 litre tank. At the onset of a trip it would not be too bad but after 20 minutes or so, black smoke billows from the exhaust and it will not move faster than 30km on a small uphill. Downhill there is no problem.
