stumbling and stalling
Hi all,
Searched the forum but nothing seems to match:
1994 E280 wagon m104 engine Auto
Symptoms:
1. stumbling when accelerating. Hard clunk as if you would brake with your left foot. this happens at any speed and warm or cold. only when accelarating.The harder the accel. the harder the clunk.
2. idle drops to almost 0 when letting off the gas. often she will stall out if you are not quick enough to give it some gas
3. stalls out at nearly every stop light. or close to
4. will stall when idling for 3 minutes or so
Has new coils, sparkplugs 20k km ago, wires done 20k ago. New harness, filters all new.
Start of it was really when I forgot my gascap 2 weeks ago. drove a whole tank before I realized it was gone as I thought it was bad gas. (with the above symptoms) . Put a new factory one one and symptoms just persist.

Could be coincidental with the gascap, although it is possible that rain might find ways to get into tank and got pumped to the engine hence contaminating fuel rails, injectors, spark plugs, etc. If this isn't the cause, the symptoms described indicate a failing fuel pump and/or fuel pump relay. Replace the Fuel Pump Relay (behind the battery) with a new or used one and see if symptoms persist. For the peace of mind, replace the fuel pumps (twin pumps) and the fuel filter as well.
