300E like new

Hi, I'm new to the Forum. Last summer I purchased an '88 300E with 19K miles! I know, I couldn't believe it either. It is just like a new car. I really love it. This is my first Benz, and I have a few questions:

1. At idle, it "hunts" a little, not much, but more than I think it should and more than another car I own with similar CIS-E injection. Is this normal?

2. Possibly related, the starter cranks many more turns than I think it should to fire the motor. Not excessive but unlike my other cars.

3. I know it's not rack and pinion, but the steering seems a bit slow and heavy. I understand the Sportline had a quicker ratio box and different front end alignment settings? Would using those settings help?

Thanks in advance.

Will post pictures after I install Euro lights.

Brad,

Not sure about the rest but "hunting" is usually down to an air leak after the air flow meter, check all joints are airtight.

Welcome Btw. Sounds like you found a gem. Good luck with it.

Hi!

Where do you live in Boston?

If you see a black E420 with Saddle interior, honk or wave

19k mi. wow... any pictures? Where did you get it from?

I've driven a 300E w/ 300k mi. and it didn't really fire up instantly like a Toyota 4-cyl. but it was fine I thought.

Maybe you could stiffen up the suspension overall? Say... a sportline setup?

honestly my E420's steering is a little slow too. It really isn't BMW quick.
