fuel gauge bounces around and trunk smells like gas
1987 560 sel ok first the fuel gauge low light began intermittently blinking and the gauge bounces up and down. Then I added fuel which caused the trunk to smell strongly of gas and also in the passenger compartment

1. The fuel level sensor might be faulty
2. The seals along the fuel inlet pipe might have become loose or broken hence allowing gas fumes to enter the cabin.
For maximum safety, would advise you get these fixed by qualified technicians.
