anothe check engine light question

HI

I have a 1988 300E and it has it's check engine light is always on for quite some time now.

I did a search for what might be the cause of this, but only found diagnosis instructions for a 94 model.

Is there any way to find out what might be the cause of this for a 1988 model?

The codes must be interrogated via the X11 diagnostic connector on the driver's side wheelwell. You need a pulse counter or an LED to read the codes.

As far as I know joeray, only models with the M119 and M104 engines from California have the LED that tells the codes. Basically '92 or newer cars.

You'll have to use the method Jer describes
