1995 E320

Found a 1995 E320 locally for sale. Price is really good, EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING on this car works. Only 116K miles, transmission was professionally rebuilt about 20K miles ago.

The only blemish on the Interior is the bottom of the drivers seat has a tear, the rest is pretty much excellent. No cracks on the dash, no cracks in the wood trim.

Clearcoat on hood, roof and trunk are shot, but a good friend with a bodyshop had a look at the detailed pics and said it would be no problem to respray/fix.

I always wanted a W124, and am thinking this could be a nice project to bring this car back to life.
Gentlemen who is selling bought it from the 2nd owner to start restoring/cleaning it up himself. Health issues however prevent him from working on cars anymore and therefore he will let it go fo 1K.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I dunno. I guess for a beater, it's ok.

Check the tag on the wiring harness near the battery if it's old or new. Old, figure $400 for a used, good, newish harness and about $700 to replace it (or DIY).

Paint and interior is $$$. If you can ignore all that and drive it as a beater car for transportation, I say, go for it if the harness has been updated. If not, substract $500 from the price.

Check for any oil leakage (i.e. signs of head gasket going). $$$

ALso check if the AC blows cold. If not, potentially $$$$ (evaporator).

See if it starts/stops/restarts consistently.

See if the suspension is shot. $$$

Thanks very much.

A few additional questions, comments:

- WHAT is the "batter"?
- WHAT does one EXACTLY need to check to determine if old or new? Is there a date stamp or something?
- AC is NOT cold, but is blowing good air? Evaporator, or does it only need a re-charge?

As mentioned, a friend can address the paint issues and all the interior would need is the drivers seat re-upholstered and a good clean job/interior detail. I do not want it as a beater, I want to fix it up and bring it back to its original glory.

Asking price is 1000 bucks, with 400 dollars of DMV back fees. So 1400 bucks would buy this car.

I meant to say "battery". Yes, look for a label. Should show month and year.

AC blows warm? You live in CA. I would think you'd need/want AC to be working.

This can be HUGE $$$. Tell him to get it re-charged and drive it for a weak to see if it holds/leaks.

Have you priced leather seat upholstery? $$$ for both the cover and labor.

As the saying goes...nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes.

Best to buy one mint. There are plenty out there.
