Stalling at red lights

Stalling at red lights
I have a 1988 300E that stalls 1 out of 5 car trips. The stalling occurs while idling at red lights and can occur 7-10 times in a trip. The car restarts promptly (but stalls again). The following repairs have been made (but the stalling continues): tune-up, injectors flushed, caps/distributor/rotor changed, oil changed, spark plugs changed, new fuel pump relay, new idle control valve, new ignition coil. My mechanic is baffled. Any ideas about what can be causing the stalling?

I see you didn't list the fuel filter as an item that was changed. If you can't remember when it was last changed, do it now.
Try cleaning the throttle body bore. Deposits build up over time that choke off the air flow at idle.
The other problem may be a bad egr valve that doesn't close off completely. That can be diagnosed by temporarily installing a thick piece of sheet metal to block the gas flow through the valve. If it runs better, you've found the problem.

1986 MB 300E
My dad had the same problem on 1996 MB E300D. We did everything that other people suggested in this thread. We took to it to numerous shops and MB dealerships and replaced almost the whole engine part by part and still did not fix the stalling problem. Finally after a year and half, yet another mercedes shop checked the wiring on the car and found an exposed wire which caused the stalling. I don't remember the details but I believe that wire shorted against a metal part and shut off fuel supply to a fuel pump. So I suggest to check wiring in your car.
