The perfect fit are AMG Monoblocks with an offset of ET42 - part # HWA1244010302, you can use 225/45/17 tires on these without rubbing the fenders.

The ones with more aggressive offset (ET35 or ET37 I think) will stick out a little bit and you may need 215/45/17 tires to avoid rubbing the fenders. Some people dont have issues as different tires have different side profiles.
18s will fit, seen them but you may need to roll the fenders depending on the tires.
In my humble opinion, the w124 looks best with the 17s with the proper lowered suspension - check out the red w124 in that link above. In terms of performance though, my E420 rode best and felt best to drive with the factory 15s
