Fuel question ..

Is it bad to drive with only 1/5 tank of fuel left? What brand of fuel is the best (if it makes a difference .. Mobile, Exxon, Shell, etc ..)? Just curious ...

Driving continuously with a low fuel tank has two concerns.

The pickup can start slurping contaminants into the line.

The fuel pump isn't bathed with fuel and can run hot. This is actually not a consideration for MB vehicles that have external fuel pumps.

All the majors share tankage

For the most part all of the major oil companies share pipeline and tankage space so much of the gasolines are intermingled. Some providers like Shell will take extra pains to deliver higher Octane and Amoco will deliver its "white or ultra clear" gasoline.

Others can add their own additives at the truck delivery terminals.

But with the exception of the added boost in octane Shell offers, there probably is little difference in gasolines. Your own experience will give you good guidance. I'd be interested if you find any differences between brands.

Some states like California have different blend components ( like oxygen sources in the fuel) but they will be consistent across the state.

Some brands in some geographies are actually alcohol blends.

I have not found any differences between any premiums though.

Keep us posted on what you find.
