Speedo Needle Bounce

Hi All,

This is my first post, and my first Mecedes, a 94 E320 Sedan, Black with 88K miles.

The only two problems noted on this vehicle are:
1 - the speedometer needle flucuates as you drive, (eg at 30 MPH it boounces between 25 and 35) it seems to flucuate faster as the speed increases, but once you get to 65 + MPH it is rock steady on the speed you are doing ... any ideas?

2 - The rear shocks look like they are original and feel soft (visible oil leakage around the tube) so they will need to be replaced, what brand do you think works best, this is going to be a touring car not a hotrod, so I want to keep some comfort but firm it up to get rid of that floating feeling. Brands ... reccomendations?

Thanks in advance

Kevin

I'm not sure about the 1994's but on my '91 300E, the speedo problem was the speedometer cable.

Both Boge and Bilstein make OEM shocks. Bilstein also make an HD OEM shock for the rear.

I've never had a Bilstein shock fail on my two Mercedes nor a Boge on my two BMW's.

yes its the speedo cable .. you or someone pulled it and stretched it ... therefore the needle is nervous at low speeds

Thanks .. Have order some repair manuals as I am a DIY mechanic, looks like these are easier to work on than my 89 Jaguar which is a real pain, and hopefully have less probs than the Jags.

I checked parts of the wiring loom under the hood and it has the original loom according to some of the date stickers on it, do all these looms go bad or is it just some of them, this one looks great with no signs of it breaking down that I can see.

....yeah, unfortunately you can expect to replace it.
It may look OK but when you start getting strange codes and weird engine problems it's the harness.
Just replace it ASAP. Also, expect the head gasket to go.
Great car though..!!

My car came with Bilstein HD (Heavy Duty) which the previous owner had just replaced before I bought the car. The springs are OEM. The ride is a little firm and controlled. No boat feeling. I really like these shocks.

How to resolve the bouncing needle? Will changing the cable help? Will it be costly to replace?
Has the same problem when driving my 200E with low speed.
