Harmonic Balancer Problem

Does anyone know if the harmonic balancer on the 104 engine is another "weak link" with this engine.
Something let loose in my 94 E320 to-day...sounded like the fan belt but when I opened the hood there was a fair bit of smoke coming from the front of the engine. I thought it might have been that one of the pulleys jammed and the belt was burning...but it didn't smell like rubber.
Got the car towed and removed the accessory belt but the engine wouldn't crank. Got under it and there are some bright pieces of aluminum coming from behind the harmonic balancer and it appears as thought the balancer is cracked.
No oil leaking....just want to know if this is another problem with this 104 engine.
Happened when the engine was hardly working at all.
Thanks
PS...I tell you my 103 never gave me so much trouble (380,000 Km)...This 104 ...well...head gasket (125Km), wiring harness (165Km) now this (180Km) and the other day somebody said it looks like it's blowing a little smoke.
