1995 E320
TRANSMISSION FLUID Recommendations

Hi All, New to this forum and hope to get some help. I have a 1995 E320, 185,000 miles. I have been trying to find the best product to replace in my transmission. I have drained the pan and the torque converter as much as I can and contacted the two dealers locally. One eventually recommended "DOT 3" fluid!?! I eventually ferreted out he was referring to .3 Transmission...which I have (I believe 722.3). So we finally got thru that he said they sell Mobil 1 D/M. I called the other dealer and he eventually called back after checking with parts mgr and they sell MB 236.14, part #001989680313. That is $25.00/ liter !!!! When I looked that up it is not recommended for 722.3? UGH! I added Havoline MD 3 a few weeks ago - 1pt before I decided to drain and refill. I have heard using pure petroleum base is better/more viscous to help with shifting problems I am experiencing....reverse is not working well, esp going up an incline. I added Transfix by LUCAS last week and that HELPED A LOT, so I will drain the system and add 2 bottles (48oz) and then the rest fill with ATF. HELP NEEDED - Thickest, compatible fluid that will 'git er dun'. Realize I probably need a rebuild, BUT.... Just need to get new fluid and the transfix in there for now. Sooo, please let me hear your thoughts. But, be nice. Cannot get a new tranny or a rebuild now... Thank You

It sounds like you have already discovered the additives that are out there on the market, and you have asked the dealers. I am no expert but a higher viscosity fluid can be used to some success but usually for internal minor leaks. The next tricky part is HOW thick can you go before you really mess things up.. I would stick to the well known additives and hope she holds out till you can have it fixed.

It's not engine oil...

IMHO, you do not want "thickest", you want what was put in the car in 1995- basic Dextron II or III ATF. Replace the filter, and then gamble on only one additive. There really is no fluid that will restore the transmission. Good luck.
