Weird question, slop in shifter

1991 300E

It's not really a big deal i wouldn't think, but the shifter on my 300e has developed some vertical slop. It has a bout half an inch of free play when you move it up and down and is rather loose in general. I'm assuming it's something really simple and just would like to know if any of you guys have had this problem before. I checked the bolt that you see when you look down the shifter under the plate, but it was still tight.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks -

EDIT: The problem occured rather suddenly. I can recall it being hard to shift out of P for a day or two, then today it was just really loose.

It may be your transmission shifter bushings....an inexpensive fix. Have your tech diagnose.
