Odometer failure

Greetings I am new to this forum, and am hoping that some of you could have some answers to this problem that just came up.

Have a 1990 300 D with 280,000 miles, two days ago the odometer (both trip and main) stopped working, the Tach and Spedo are working fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

AJM

You have three options:
  • Get a used speedometer and set the odometer to your current mileage.
  • Have an MB mechanic or dealership send the speedometer to VDO for rebuild.
  • Order new gears from www.odometergears.com.

These gears available through odometergears.com are custom-made because VDO does not sell the original gears as spare parts.

Thanks, I will try the gears from odometergears.com. It may be the least expensive alternative.

The new gears should be the least expensive. Just make sure you know how to properly remove the instrument cluster otherwise this small fix will become expensive!

Did you happen to try resetting it while the vehicle was moving? Though I am not certain about your particular yr/mod most in that era had issues with the friction hold being lost between a gear and the shaft. I had to remove my dash, pull the cluster and go through the procedure of forcing the shaft out while using a stiff wire to hold the dial numbers in place. Once the shaft is out you score or rough the outer surface. Re-install the shaft and press it into the gear. Took some work but it works just great.
Best of luck
Steve
