Angry "Hot" ENGINE

Hi ,

My engine overheated yesterday and after i opened the outlet to the coolant place , it all bubbled and burst out...after that I had it towed ,

I have had the muffler installed and have got an oil change done in the last week its been like three days !

Prior to that a month ago I got the water pump replaced because it was leaking !

I was hoping I could get some advise on what steps i could take to determine the extent and nature of the damage , because I am totally broke and really cant afford and auto mechanic right now !
I would be very greatful if I could get some advise !

I would really appreciate your help

Thanks

a desparate and broke 87 300e owner !

What was the nature of driving when it overheated? City driving with lots of stop and go with AC on? or was it highway driving?

and you should never open the coolant reservoir without letting the pressure out slowly...

The overheating was most likely caused by a broken water pump but first do check that serpentive belt is in place.

hhmm overheated on the highway, make sure that your thermostat is working correctly?

They should malfunction in the open position though... (ie, making the car run cooler than it should be or long warm up periods)

other than that, i can only think that it is the water pump

Is there any water in the oil or oil in the water?

haters crazy
Isn't it possible that the radiator is plugged somewhere and just needs to be flushed? Its most likely the water pump though, and they are hard to change.

Overheating at highway speeds usually suggests an issue w/ the radiator (clogged, leaking, lack of air-flow to cool - something covering the front). Thermostats are usually associated w/ overheating @ slower speeds (of course either is possible). Water-pump (again?) ... could be... you don't see any signs of obvious leakage from anywhere else do you?

btw, as Holson mentioned, you should never attempt to "check" fluid levels in the radiator (or reservoir for that matter) when the car is hot, especially when it's overheating... the entire system is under extreme pressure and could potentially discharge some pretty freakin' hot stuff all over you... hence the "bubbling" you experienced... good luck...

I had some overheating on some stop and go traffic. Freeway driving was fine. A new thermostat fixed that problem.

As already mentioned overheating on the freeway suggest a problem with your radiator. That's an easy remove and replace job. If there is no oil in the radiator and no water on the dipstick you're set. If there is.....I'm sorry to inform you that you're looking at a $1,000+ job.
