Habill thank you and i am sorry for the late reply .Reason i asked about this is, i could see no way that oil can circulate in to the hydralic compensator -tappet .They have no holes in them for outside oil to replenish them .That link explained it but i could not see how oil gets in there to ceate the cushioning efect .

I've never seen a hydraulic tappet in person, but according to the thread I linked there is a small ball at the bottom that works as a valve to let oil in.

I'm sure there is some path for the oil to fill the lifter. In general, the lifter/cam follower/tappet typically has a small hole and journal machined into the casting allowing it to fill with oil as it rides inside its seated position. Most often there is a spring inside that keeps the lifter extended until oil pressure pumps up the lifter fully. Some manufactures use an oil path that oil fills only when the lifter is compressed, so it's not obvious to see when the lifter is removed. And correct, a check valve and spring are typically built inside preventing oil drain-back when the engine is shut down. As an example, a lifter off of a domestic GM V8 will have a clip on the push-rod end allowing the assembly to be "rebuilt". Although no one rebuilds these today. The same principle may apply for your Merc. You can soak the lifter in oil allowing any cavities to fill and purge air prior to installation. The issue will be post install adjustment of the backlash of the lifter. Often it will take a while for the new lifter to fully pump up. Amazingly I had an issue that collapsed my lifter and on every engine startup, it would take about 5 minutes for the lifter to pump up and quiet down . I did an oil change using Liqui Molly and then added Liqui Molly friction additive and it immediately went away and hasn't come back since.

How did things turn out for you....what's the latest scoop?

Spider face I wont be doing this replacement yet plans have changed . .Well not this year anyway , Car goes in on Monday for MOT test .The test was due in March gone .But due to this Kung Flu the powers to be gave us all 6 months grace .So i am due at the test station at 3pm Monday the 12 of October . Then if i have no problems i will cover the car over in thermal sheets and finish with an all weather cover till March of next year . Thanks to everyone that provided an explanation for me...
