W124 300E 24
300E 24V (with pics) buying advice.

Howdy people - I hope you can give some advice about this one.

I am eager to join the W124 community and have this car in sight.
It is the W124 300E 24V, and the information about it is scarce except the pictures.

1. I have heard these cars would benefit from getting the wiring loom overhauled and the Cylinder Head Gasket checked. Are these things prone to fail on every w124?
If so - at what mileage should one except these ones to seize, and is it monitored by the driving habits of the former owner?

2. This example tickle my bells. However - I suspect that these rims are not original since it is the AMG's. What are your experience of a good tire and rim setup with this model - still keeping it original?

3. Is the grill original (I suspect not) - if not so - What model of grill is on this car?

4. Are the head lights original?

Based on the current look of the car. What year would you guess it was made?

Best Regards
Loquor

Those rims are 17" amg monoblocks ~ET34-38. Square setup I believe. It's a nice combination. They look to be original.
Not original wheels on this w124 - oem was 15" wheels.
17s do work as long as you have the correct ET - 16s are best imo, if yo cannot get the correct 17s - tires max 215 55/50 (205s (with 16s) will work with no rubbing issues on the fender lips.)
17s, Ive heard is a hit and miss on the rubbing (& depending on the tires)
Post your query on the BW forum. You'll get much more input from the members there.

w124 300e 24v - 1989-92
eco junk harness issues 92-96,97 - all models across the MB line.
affected the main harness, lower harness, TBA wiring were the main ones to worry about.
I would make sure you can either obtain a replacement main harness or have it rebuilt, if not addressed yet. (there are a couple of reputable rebuilders/ sellers). Many of the replacement connectors are nla.
Tranny is also an issue on these w124s - 722.6xx (reverse band issues typically) - easy 2-2.5k for a replacement/rebuild.

Based on the presence of the Sacco skirts at the bottom of all of the doors and the 300E badge, this car is between a 1989-1993. It's a facelifted car but it was built before the change to E300 in 1994.Typically the wiring harness issue is 94 and 95 but it's good to check to be sure. The head gasket is a known issue for the M103 engine so be sure that's checked. The headlights look to be European but they could've been swapped in at some point. W124s have a good reputation for being durable but like all mechanical things, they will need maintenance from time to time. Try and get as many previous service records as you can. I would get a PPI to make sure there are no hidden expensive issues. If the seller refuses to allow a PPI then walk away. Good luck.

There were no service book/scarce history available so I walked away. Now on the hunt for other beauties. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.

You're welcome. When in doubt, walk away. You want to buy the best car you can afford. Understand t that the really good ones won't be cheap. As the old saying says, "there's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes".
