Need benz info

Hey guys

I am currently an owner of an 1990 infiniti q45. Due to some mechanical problems that I cant deal with right now I am looking at an 88 300E. I would really appreciate if you guys would post your facts, opinions and comments about this vehicle. I would like to make an informed decision. All data will be welcomed.

Probably the best Mercedes ever. If the one you are looking at was well maintained, expect many years and literally hundreds of thousands of miles for your use. Truly a great vehicle!

thanks jer

the benz was owned by a church woman and the car only has 56000 miles. my mechanic who now owns the car owns a 98 s600, 87 190E, 88 190E.

He knows these cars and takes care of them. He would be the only one working on it.

I've got an 86 300E and I'm satisfied. Just make sure that you get a pre-purchase inspection. If all checks out, you're good to go. That car is basically still new with only 56000 miles. I have 156000 on mine and the car still runs tight.

Off the top of my head, here are some of the possible problems:
1. Wire harness (although it's more of a problem in the 93-95 models)
2. Head gasket (problem w/M103 & M104)
3. Fuel pump
4. ECV
5. MAS
6. A/C evaporator
7. Ignition tumbler - replaced after 18yrs of every day use
8. Fuel sending unit
9. OVP - replaced after 18yrs
10. Transmission - 1st rebulid after 150,000 miles
11. Alternator - replaced after 150,000 miles
12. Window switch - replaced after 18yrs
13. Driver side window motor - replaced after 18yrs
14. Sun roof open/close slowly

I spent quite a bit last year after my car hit 150,000miles. But after getting them fixed/replaced (#7,9,10,11,12,13) I have not had a problem. I listed the other problems based on what I've read on this forum.

These cars are almost bullet proof. If you get a good one that's been cared for, it'll last you a LONG TIME. On the other hand, if you get one that was abused it'll be your worst nightmare...this is why there isn't much comments to your query. Best advice is to get a PPI before purchasing the car. (You mentioned the car has only 56,000miles. If the car has been well cared for, I don't expect you to have any problems until the car hits 100,000miles)
