strange overheating issue

I know there are a ton of other threads discussing this and I feel like I've read just about all of them but I thought my issue seemed a little different. I have a 1993 300e with an m104. While sitting in traffic even on a mild day the temp begins to creep up very high getting close to the red if it sits for several minutes. I have found that if I were to put the car in neutral and rev it to around 2,000 the temp drops down almost immediately. If I am at a very long light and then drive off the temp is usually back down before I am even up to speed. Obviously this makes sense because the water pump is spinning faster. Both cooling fans seem to be working. I just recently bought the car and would prefer to not just go through replacing every single cooling component which is what I have done on cars in the past and would like to avoid spending that kind of money as I don't plan on keeping this car long term.

'93 300E "Strange overheating Issue" .. Air Flow?

Our 1- Family-owned '94 E320 Coupe exhibited similar hot engine temps via the instrument gauge as does your '93 300E M104. The '94 Coupe service history we thought had been thorough enough since new car delivery.
A thorough external cleaning of the A/C condenser (fins), as well as the external fins of the radiator, did the trick. Removal of the radiator and fan clutch gave way to the needed room so as to minimize any fin damage of both.

External cleaning of the condenser & radiator very much improved the engine cooling performance. Akin to a vitamin B shot - doesn't hurt!

Well I found at least part of the issue. Was pulling things apart to just get an idea of the condition of the entire system and found the thermostat was completely shot. I’ve ordered a new one as well as new factory coolant. While I have everything drained I’m planning on take out the radiator and fans to clean everything out. There is a substantial amount of buildup on the condenser which I tried to remove with compressed air but was pretty unsuccessful. Thanks for the replies.
