87 300d engine knock....
From what I have read, it pays to get them checked out by a diesel injection shop who will be able to conduct a Pop test and check the spray pattern.
If you still have the old injectors and know which of them is a good one, it may be worthwhile swapping out an injector at a time until you find the bad one/one's.

I had a similar situation. Knock was so loud that I thought I was going to be buying a new short block. Turned out to be one bad injector.

I watched the MB mechanic (I don't know squat about diesels) troubleshoot the knocking. He knew (from experience) exactly what the problem was.
He loosened the fittings where the metal fuel line connects to the injector, one by one. If the knocking didn't change, he tightened that fitting and loosened the next one. Sure enough, by the time he got to the fifth fitting, he loosened it, and the knocking stopped altogether. He then changed that one injector, and sent me on my way. Total time: 10 minutes.
NOTE: when loosening the fitting, a small amount of diesel will shoot out under high pressure! Wear eye protection, and be certain to clean it up afterward. I can't recall, but he probably had a shop rag draped over the injector and wrench while he was loosening/tightening the fittings.
Hope this is helpful for you.
