Transmission Help w124
I have 230E 89 model
going at 3rd at low speed such as at 50Km/h or below, as soon as i take off my foot from the gas pedal, it shifts 4th. Why is this?would adjusting vacuum modulator help in this case.
car should be driven at high RPM or Low. Which is better.
Would changing ordinary ATF with good fluid(synthetic) and filter help in smooth shift.

If the fluid is old, a change will help.
Adjusting the Bowden cable might help with the shift points. If you are gaining speed when you release the accelerator, you are telling the transmission you are done accelerating and are ready to cruise at a steady speed. Adjusting the modulator will only affect the smoothness of the shifts, and is not recommended, because too soft a setting will cause flare.

i don't gain speed and naturally i can't gain speed when i release the gas pedal. there will be no gas to the engine and RPM will tend to decrease but it shifts to next.
suppose i am driving 50Km/h and at 3rd with 2500RPM, there is a hump ahead, so anyway i have to decrease the speed and may be apply brake. As soon as i take off my foot from gas, RPM will go down, but it shifts to 4th(that is actually not needed). I don't know why mercedes has made the tranny like that.

The transmission is not supposed to upshift as soon as you release the accelerator. What I meant earlier was, if you are picking up speed (as if stopped at a red light then you resume driving when the light turns green) the transmission starts off in 2nd, then goes up to 3rd, and eventually 4th. If you hold down the accelerator for a long period, the transmission will stay in 3rd (or 2nd) gear longer to give you more torque. Then when you let back on the accelerator the transmission knows you don't need all that power, and upshifts to 4th. The Bowden cable adjusts these points.
Flare is when the transmission changes gears, and there is a long delay between them. I think this can wear out the brake bands.
