87 300E Engine Oil Leak

I heard a lot about engine oil leaks with the 300E and now I am experiencing the problem. It looks to me like the leak is coming from the engine block just behind the alternator. I took it to a local gas station mechanic and he said that it looked like it was coming from an area near the motor mount and that it is a common problem. Anybody have same type of problem? If so, what did you have to do to get it repaired? So far, the leak is slow.

Leaks around the front cover (timing case) are common and easily fixed. The other source of leaks is the head gasket at the rear of the engine. This takes more time and $$$ to rectify.

Please do not take your Mercedes to a gas station mechanic.

Thanks for the info Jer. I assure you the only reason I took my Mercedes to a gas station is because I was freaked out by the leak. I usually take her to a certified MB dealership.

Oil leak around front cover is very common. I am not sure it is easy to fix. You need to replace the U seal. It might take car owner 4-5 hour to do the right job. (If you know how). My 89 300 ce has the same problem. My friend told me to live with it. I called MB dealer, they suggested me to change oil to 20w50 (thicker oil). the problem seems correct a little bit.

my mom had a 87 300E, yeah it marked its place on the drive way with a huge oil drip mark...

chnage the oil and use 20w50, and toss in a bottle (or 2) of Lucas heavy oil stabalzier with your oil change. that should fix the problem
