200k mile 500E...would you do it?

Found a local that's interested in selling his 500E for under $9k, has 200k miles...with a V8 that's never been opened, supposedly...doesn't use synthetic oil, but changes it every 3k.

Believe it's a company car, or was...and when asked what he'd rate the ext/int. from 1-10, he replied "If you were being picky, i'd give the exterior an 8, and i'd give the interior an 8 also"

Says the car still runs extremely strong, doesn't use oil, or leak any and isn't sure if the auto leveling is still there, or if it works or not.

Just looking for some opinions, don't know too much about the engines or the car in general...and this is a high mileage example, so don't want to take any risks.

Thanks,

if they say they don't know about the suspension, etc. I interpret that as "the sh*t dont work", so your best bet would be to take it to a local mechanic and find out if/what needs fixing and how much its going to cost you...GL

200K miles is nothing on an M119.

However, echo the above.

look for leaks around the back of the head gaskets, look at the body panels, all MB body panels wil have a sticker with the car's VIN# on them. If the car has been wrecked, the replacement panel will have a sticker that says "Replacement". Look at the color of the transmission fluid, oil and coolant. None should be cloudy. Most importantly, look at the service books.

I'd have the suspension components checked out.

Check the transmission fluid. How does it shift? They should shift very smoothly actually. Not quite new car smooth but smooth. The downshifts should be nice and firm too.

Also, dawdling around 20mph, a healthy 5.0 in the 500E should really push you into the seat when you floor it!

Make sure the A/C evaporator has been replaced, or budget $3k or around there to have it done properly.

Check the upper engine wiring harness for cracks. Could start by examining the connectors?

can't think of anything else that's really problematic in a 124. The rest is the same taxi-grade durability that you'd get in a 200D

These things must be getting so rare that I've only seen one in the past 1/2 yr....

Anyone know if 89 300E has a dipstick or do I have to go to dealer for trasmission fluid change?

appreciate your response!
