head gasket fixed, now wont start

I just replaed the head gasket on my girlfriends E320. I got the head milled, replaced the gasket and all associated bits and now the car wont start. There is no coolant or oil leaking, everything was wired correctly (I marked everything) and the vacuum hoses are all correct. The car does have spark. My thoughts are possible compression, timing electrical, timing mechanical(which was marked many different places), and fuel.

THe fuel rail I marked which was return and supply, but the marks wore off due to the presence of gasoline. I am not sure at this point whihc is which. I know that on the fuel rail the line that goes to the pressure regulator is the return, and the other is te supply. What I don't know is which of the actual rubber lines is which. THere is one line that looks like it goes through a filter, but that the A/C line runs through, and the other just goes straight back under the car. Any ideas on which is which?

By the way, that A/C line running through the fuel line is WEIRD! Anybody else ever notice this?

Thanks,
Rob

update

THe car started once. After I changed the fuel lines (switched them) the car started right up and died right away. It seems like maybe it is too rich? So when I changed the fuel lines they didn't have the normal amount of gas in them, causing a "lean" condition which helped the car start.

Oh yeah, I also found that the mechanical timing was off by one tooth on the intake cam. I took it back apart yesterday and fixed this also.

So, compression is good (checked it yesterday), spark is good, and the timing is correct. (It has HFM electrical distributorless timing, so that can't be a problem)

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rob

Hello Rob,
Are you Sure your spark is good for every cylinder? I had a very simialr problem on a C280 (95) and it was the upper harness going bad. How many miles on this car?

I checked spark on three of the cylinders

about 100,000 miles. The harness does not feel brittle or cracked anywhere.

Is there any way I can confirm the timing of the HFM system?

Thanks,
Rob

Does your fuel pump work? Does it "humm" for a couple of seconds after you turn the ignition on? Have you checked the fuses? MBZ has nasty fuse design, sometimes it lookes OK, but it gets burned right where the fuse touches the clamp.
