1987 300E
I've been offered a 1987 Mercedes 300E. I really don't know much about the car. It may be a rust buggy. I don't know if it's rear or all wheel drive. Any tips on what to look for? I've had M-B cars before so I'm familiar with some of their "Quirks". I've never had a 6 cylinder gas engine. What's the timing chain/belt maintenance? Rust prone areas? Anything else I'm not smart enough to check?

The local MB dealer parts department is pretty good. The service side is a little more problematic. Not to mention expensive, even for a dealer. We have a local shop that specializes in German imports and they have done work for me in the past. I figure to do most of the work myself.
I'm wondering were rust tends to form on these cars. A Jeep TJ for instance is prone to rust forming on the frame near the front suspension. mounts. I'm wondering where to look on these cars.

What is the "true" mileage of this car in question? Probably one of the most important factors in maintenance and whether it is worth keeping if you do not DYI repairs.
The dealer or other indy bills can easily run up to $5000-$6000 very quickly trying to restore the car.
