failed smog, need advice on what to check
the '90 e300 failed smog.... bad. max was 740 for co2 and the e300 got a 1000. any suggestions on what try to fix first? it has new ignition wires, plugs, oil/filter, air filter. also, what is the small tube that leads up to the metal air filter container ( that small tube is broken). also, occasionally the check engine light comes on below 3000rpm and goes away when the car passes that rpm. sorry for ranting so much, but i hope you guys can help me!

lemme stab in the dark a bit.
1)there is an emissions problem
2)have a look at the catalyctic converter
