'93 300TE 4-Matic Timing Belt or Chain?
Hello all,
Recently acquired a very low mileage '93 300TE 4-Matic and I'm wondering if these cars (U.S. market) have timing belts or chains. If belt, what is the change interval?
On another note, seems like I have an oil leak from the front seals. Is that common, or serious?

All Mercedes engines use chains.
The leak at the front cover is common and nothing serious. Just keep an eye on the oil level. If you ever replace the timing chain, the seals will be replaced concurrently.

it probably was not low mileage, it ws probably mileage turned back...
well change the oil, hopefully they used a synth, toss in a bottle of Lucas Heavy Oil stabalzier (or synth HOS if you use synth). that should stop the leak. if not get a bottle of that STP oil stop leak, its good stuff.

I don't know if the M104 engines have the same leaky valve seals that the M103 engines do, but don't worry about your oil leak. My '91 300E looses about a 1/2 quart between oil changes. Maybee a little more if most of the driving has been highway miles. They even sell a W124 engine "Diaper" for the bottom skid plate. Keep an eye on the dip stick everytime you fill up and think about having the chain and front cover replaced at 80-100k miles, along with the head gasket. I personally would hesitate on using any oil additives. Just make sure you keep the oil level in the safe zone, change the engine oil regularly and enjoy your new car.
