300TE: Metal rattle coming from engine at 1500 rpm?

Hi,

my 300TE automatic with 138,000 miles on it has a rattle that seems to be coming from either the engine or undeneath the car. It is only audible at 1500 rpm, not above or below that, it sounds like something rattling in a tin can. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what it could be?

I would check your exhaust first. Muffler's are really just big "Tin Cans" and when they come loose or rust out they can start rattling like that. See if you can have some one sit inside the car and keep the engine and the RPM that causes the noise and look around the car.

I had a similar sounding problem...I know its hard to diagnose with an auto but is the noise rev related or speed related as my symptoms were at about 1500 rpm but disappeared once the engine was doing over about 2000 rpm. The rattle I had was a sort of metallic noise, almost diesel like just on pull away.

I eventually diagnosed mine to be faulty belt tensioner shock absorber. Its a 20 minute job to replace and the parts pretty reasonable at around $50 IIRC.
