OVP and outdoor temp display

Hello,

I've got a question about W124 / 320E 1994 52400 km.

Las week-end i change my battery, it was dead. So MB start my car with an other one, and i have changing mine at home later.

After this, last week i start my 320E for cleaning my air conditionned. It take about 10mn the engine was running and i take some gaz into the airflow for cleaning.

After 10mn, rough idle, the engine stop ! i run again, rough idle but the car drive OK. Still rough idle engine stop ! i see can't see my outdoor temperature on the display (displayed numbers are not black !)

After one day and 100miles, engin is doing perfect job no problem with idle, outdoor temperature display is 100% readable.

So I change my OVP for a new one today, at this moment, no problem with idle, but the outdoor temperature is always light, and very difficult to read.
(not always !)

Do you know this problem ??

08 Lexus GS350 AWD. 08 Lexus RX350 AWD - wife's. 94 MBZ E320 - still have it.
The outdoor temp gauge has only 2 parts: a sensor itself in the front bumper next to the front license plate, and the dispay unit in the dash. Is your sensor goes out, the display simply goes dead. If you see something on the display, but not dark enough, it's the dispay gone bad. You are looking at around $250 at MBZ dealership, if you are in the US.

hello,

thanks for your answer. So, mine is not 100% dead, it's just random ! sometime readable 100% sometime it's not totaly dark, it's middle gray... so perhaps ground problem ?

will see next time.... perhaps only a ground problem with humidity.

I have different problem with my 190E 'temperature'. When I start the car the display shows -37 and then goes blank.

Any suggestions??

We located the temperature gauge under the front license plate, it looks good but it is not grounded - just 'cliped-on' to the rear of the plastic license plate 'holder'.

Is the engine wiring harnes original? These cars have the engine wiring harness problem where the wire insulation becomes brittle and flakes off, leading to spurious shorts and all kinds of undiagnosable electrical gremlins related to engine driveability.

I recommend replacing the engine wiring harness. Some mechanics won't even begin to diagnose driveability problems unless the engine wiring harness is replaced. There's no guarantee it'll fix your problem, but there's also a good chance it will fix the problem. You won't be wasting your money. The original engine wiring harness in this model is a defective part that, with time, can take out delicate electrical components.
