i need help
i am interested in buying a 1990 mercedes benz 300E but i am not sure if the car is worth the money. Right now, the mileage on the vehicle is 224651, the vehicle has been in an accident causing rear-end damage. In the state of New York, the title on the car reads as a salvage vehicle but i looked at the vehicle and you see no damage at all. Now, the seller is telling me that the car doesnt have those miles on it, it really has 124651, that the odometer jumped and it went to 2 instead of 1. I did a carfax and it does have over 200,000 miles on it. My questions is......Has anyone ever heard of that happening to a Mercedes Benz...the odometer jumping? He is selling this vehicle to me for $2500. IS IT WORTH IT? PLEASE HELP ME....SHOULD I BUY IT OR SHOULD I PASS ON THIS DEAL?

I agree, if it smells like a scam, it probably is one.
There are a lot of well maintained W124s out there that should give you many years of service, I'd look for one with service records. The one you describe seems kind of shady...Whatever you buy, take it to a Mercedes-Benz dealer and have it inspected, it will save you a lot of money in the long run.

if the state of new york says its a salvage vehicle, what the owner is asking for is wayy too much, especially since it has been in an accident (a major one if i think so)
also, i don't think it is a well maintained car, if the odo jumped as the owner has said, carfax should have picked it up.
All in all, go with what the rest said, have an mb dealership have a look at the car. if they say it's good enough, then get it at a lower price.

I have been dealing with W124 cars for over 14 years, and an odometer jumping is the weirdest thing I ever heard to screw people about the milage. The odometers of the W124 are so simple to tamper with, so never rely on the readings only, if you have doubts. If it is declared a salvage car, and has the milage as per carfax just go out and search for something better. $ 2,500 is way too much anyway. Teh rear end damage has probably been "fixed" in a "garage" where junk is brought back to life.

Walk away
Marybeth, just to echo these other guys, the car isn't worth it. I had an insurance claim adjuster tell me once to NEVER buy a car that had body repair work done in New York City. These guys are "Artists" not "Craftsmen", if they can cram 40lbs of body filler into a dent rather than buy a new panel, they will. There are plenty of other W124's in the sea, just keep looking.
