Worth Buying?
I kinda of new to the Mercedes , and my mother and I would like to purchase a 1992 300 CE that we found for $9,400 with 136,000 miles. (We've previously owned a 190E that I serviced myself (tune-ups, shocks, minor enging work etc.) The car ran beautifully with no problems.)
Anyway, this 300CE We're looking at is really nice. The only problems I have noticed is that while in park the idle will climb up to about 2,000 -2500 rpm and then back down to about 750 or so. She does this for awhile then once you've driven it, it only happen inttermittenly. The other problem is while in drive and at a stop the car steeps to stumble and then return to normal this only happens for a split second as if she was going to die. The next problem seems to be with the shifter. When you brake hard the shifter moves back a little, and when you sometimes accelerate.
Do you think it's worth buying?
If it is, do you think these problems are just minor things I can fix?
Does the BMW Tech no what the problem might be?
Your opinions are greatly considered - FLYBY33
The Mass Air Sensor is cheap (about $225???), but the throttle actuator is expensive (about $1,000).
I don't know what you mean by the shifter moving back, but it could be a transmission mount or a shifter bushing.
I would check to see if the check engine light is illuminated.
I think that without a diagnosis, I wouldn't buy it. It also doesn't seem very cheap, especially with an idle problem.
Also, even if a used car looks good, never buy it without getting a pre-purchase inspection from a Mercedes Benz independent technician. $100 up front could save you from buying a basket case.
Paying full price for a good, used Mercedes with a good history of regular maintenance is always cheaper than buying a "bargain" car with a lot of problems. Don't try and fool yourself you can save money by resuscitating a tired car.
