You should degrease the engine, I don't know about watering. If you do though, would be wise to cover up the distrubutor, wires, plugs and all that stuff with a plastic bag of some sort.

be very careful with washing your engine, there are lots of electrical items that can get damaged.
I have steam cleaned my engine before, but I took the time to bag up anything electrical I could see and stayed away from anything I was unsure about.

260E , 1989 (for now)
I wash the engine compartment of my car at least once a year. I have always done it when the engine is lukewarm
I usually buy a few spray cans of "Gunk engine wash" and give the engine a very good shower, wait a few minutes and spay-off the stuff with a garden hose at its full pressure setting.
Once done, I re-start the engine and make sure it reaches its normal operating temperature for at least half an hour.
Never had any electrical problem of any sort using this method.
True, my car is still new: 1989 260E with 448,000K on the clock. Maybe when it gets older, it will be a different story.

What Jackd said...Go to your local auto parts store and check out what they got. "Gunk" works pretty good but there are others out there. Some require rinsing and some don't. Some require you to actually wipe up the cleaner, others don't. But all, if not most, will tell you to cover/bag all electrical parts and wires. Just find what's best for you.
