remote control

Anyone know the lifespan of a remote control...I have the knife like one for a '96 w210....
Mine stop working...changed the battery...worked once...and no more...I tested it by holding down the remote button and NO red flashing...
So I'm thinking its time for a new one from the "STEALER".....

I think it might help you save some money and a key.

Benchang,
thanks for the info.

Mine is the switch blade.
Is it possible to buy a used remote on ebay and reprogrammed it.

Also, a friend has a remote that he's not using....can I reprogram the remote to work with my car....His is a '96 w210 too.

I'm too additcted to the remote entry....I hate sticking the key inside the whole.

Used ones are no good. They can not be reprogrammed.

Sorry I can't answer your questions.
I know that Zam2000 removed his old chip and installed it to the other remove control.
Since the key can't be reprogramed.

What Zam did will not work on a switch blade type key.
Zam has a 98 and his key is different.

You may have to get a new key from the dealer on this one.

Let us know what they charge you.

Good Luck

From my understanding the switch blade (key) type is not the same as the newer "SmartKey". From memory, I thought the older type remote "can" interchange with other remotes of the same type. The owners manual had the procedure to program this type. Like everyone else reported, the Smartkey type cannot be reprogrammed from one care to another. The data seems to be hard coded into some sort of read only memory in the Smartkey. This why the Ebay Smartkey modified with the original memory chip worked.

The switch blade keys can not be reprogrammed either. The procedure in the book is for resyncronizing it after the battery is changed. It still has to be the one for the car that it came with.

The verdict is in, couldn't get the remote to work, checked the contacts and even have a mechanic at the benz stealer checked it out....
So I ordered a new remote/key...can't order the remote by itself....$138 + tax.
