update
..the visible rust issues were "addressed" last week (still cost me $$$$) and the car "looks" great. Unfortunately I think this car is cursed so it will be sold. It was listed in the local Auto Trader to-day. I'm look'n at a Nissan G35 to replace it ! I'm afraid my 25 year love affair with Mercedes-Benz is over. 
I have relatives in Germany who won't even buy them...what does that tell you! Life goes on......things change...nothing is for ever...(but it still pisses me off)

If I understood earlier comments, you opted to not take MB's offer and went the repair route. I am curious if the body shop did any special preparation before repainting. Strip all the way down to metal? Special rust treatment? Would you mind sharing your cost?

No special prep. Basically sand blast, prime and paint. Not much else to do. Rust is impossible to stop. And, like an iceberg, what you see is only an indication of what is really there.
