Transmission Problem with W210 E320
Hey all,
I have a 1997-98 e320 with about 60k miles and ive recently been having problems with the transmission.
My car would run ok but after a while (i guess when it heats up) it does not downshift or upshifts. it stays in either 1st or 2nd gear. at one point it wouldnt even go into reverse. But when i restart my car, everything goes back to normal.
I've taken it to my mechanic and he told me to replace 5 inner discs since they were worn out. I told him to replace all 15 instead. When i first took it for a drive, it was fine, then a few minutes later, the exact same thing happened before replacing the inner discs.
Any thoughts?
Thanks guys,
G.

Have you have your fluild checked and see the condition, cuz if it's not red, then your tranny may be going out.

Search for transmission threads on this board. lots of people have had transmission problems. For your year, one issue had been tx fluid wicking into wire insulations and leaking into the transmission ECU.
I started having simmilar problems with my tx but realized that my fluid level was low. You will have to bring it to a dealer to have tx fluid checked.
It is best if it is an independant shop since tx fluid has to be a certain temp to be level-chechked.
Pop open the black plastic box (pass side under hood on top of firewall) secured with three or four bolts, and you will see all cpu's, ecus, etc. If there is any fluid, there is your culprit.
Solution: replace tcu, have new seals installed at the wires on tx box.
I hope its that. because all in all thats below $500.
Good Luck. Happy searching for older threads on same problem.

thanks for the reply guys,
actually, i opened the plastic box and its dry as a bone. could it be that we havent reset the computer? i guess it sounds logical since when i started having the problem, the shifting was smooth but it would stay stuck in a gear. now that i've replaced the inner discs, its the same problem but the shifting from N to D or N to R is tighter.
