Need help (inside rear view mirror)

Sup guys,

I have a E420 year 97. Well as you know the E420 has a infrared receiver on the rear view mirror that’s inside the car. I am unable to lock/unlock the car and i am pready sure its the rear view sensor that’s broken. I took the car to the Mercedes shop and they couldn’t figure it out. Yesterday as i was driving i noticed that burning wire smell, and couldn’t figure out what it was until the smoke started coming out of my rear view mirror. So now i know for sure the receiver is not working.

I have tested the central locking switch inside the car, and i can luck and unlock with no problem so that tells me that mechanical parts work fine so it must be the receiver.

I am trying to find that rear mirror, but i have had not luck. I found the rear mirrors that go on the side of the car, but i couldn’t find the one that goes inside.

I looked up the manual and the part number i think is P68.00-0399-20 for the mirror. Is there any place that i can order the mirror from?

Also I know that every key is different it has a specific number that receiver recognizes and ulocks the car, my question is dose the receiver has to be specifically made for that key or are they all the same.

I think the receiver are all the same.

The car has an mechanical lock on the passenger side, so it can get inconvenient sometimes especially when you have your hands full of groceries.

Thank you

On the 97 there should be a receiver on the door or the trunk lid as well correct? Try aiming at them to see if you can operate the locks. I have a receiver that mounts under the rear view mirror that I could sell to you. I tested it on my 96 and it works.

Yeah, there is a receiver on the trunk as well. I tried that too but no luck. I will need the whole rear mirror cause i think the wires in there are probably burned now.

I am interested in that receiver you have but something has burned in side the rear mirror and even if the receiver is working i doubt it would be able to send the signal to the computer so it can unlock the door.

I would love to take that mirror apart and see what’s going on in there, but don’t want to brake it if its so hard to find a new one.

The receiver has the electronics board and connector with it. You might have to unplug your mirror if it is shorting out the remote lock system and then try the other receiver in the trunk. The two halves of the mirror come apart. They are snapped together. You have to be careful not to break the shell of the mirror.

Yeah that’s a good possibility and you know i think that could be it. Cause chances of all three receivers to fail at the same time is very low.

I tried to take that mirror down but i was unsuccessful. I gave up because i was putting allot of pressure on it and was afraid i was going to break it. Is there a way you have to move it or something to make it come easy?

I need this info because my rear view mirror moves a little when I hit bumps. Meaning it has a little play in it and I want to replace it. How do you take it down?

Yes, those that have done it successfully please post any info or tips on how to remove the rear view mirror. That would be very helpful.

I just talked to the Mercedes dealer, i asked him about the receiver and he told me that i have to buy the whole rear view mirror, and then he gave me the price 600$$$ for the mirror. I was ready to pay like up to 200$ for the mirror even if though i only need the receiver but that’s just way to much.

Please there is good to be a way around this guys, i am thinking of calling the Mercedes in Germany and ordering directly from them, has anybody done this??

All i need a receiver that goes inside the mirror, that’s all.

Any German guys, E-Klass you are probably from Germany right?  Can you give me any info or suggestions on how to go about contacting Mercedes in Germany.

Any suggestions on what to do, i will definitely try to get that mirror down and see if that fix is it.

Have you considered calling a salvage yard. I mean see if you can locate a wrecked one that you can get the mirror from. You will most likely pay less than $100 for one that way. I know salvage and Benz don't go together but it is better than $600 for a freaking mirror.

The parts inside the mirror are not sold separately but you can replace them. The mirror base pulls down from the headliner. If your mirror shakes or moves when you hit a bump, it is because the ball and socket joint has broken loose inside the top of the mirror. You have to take the mirror apart and secure that part. The receiver is a separate board in the bottom of the mirror.
