Re the following, can anyone tell me how to remove and replace the shell of the mirror so I can check the spring mount?
Replaced the entire mirror about a year ago for about $500--it was mysteriously dangling from its mount. Today, removing the cover from the car I noticed that the same mirror is [again mysteriously] loose. Not dangling, but it just seems to flop and not fit tightly in place. I looked at previous posts on how to deal with this, but the photos/drawings are not too clear. Is this something that is a recurring problem? Any fixes? Any permanent fixes? Thanks!

It sounds like the spring that holds the mirror tight against the body has either come unhooked or more probably has broken the tab where it hooks to the body mount. I had a similar experience with a mirror on a W202 and the dealer gave me the broken mirror. I was able to create a tab for the spring to hook onto and now the mirror sits in a box waiting for someone to need it. The 202 has been replaced with a W211 and the new mirrors are a little different.
