I settled on a 98 E320 4Matic last November for $13,900. (In my experience, the AWD adds $1-$2k to the value over comparable RWD cars.) I bought it from the original owner. It has one very little door ding, no accidents or paintwork, no leaks, no rust anywhere, and the interior is mint. My A/C compressor went out, but other than replacing that $$$ item, I haven't had any other issues in the 10k miles I've owned it.

Think of it this way. A lot of brand new cars -- many not nearly as nice as a Mercedes -- depreciate $7500 or more in the first year. Even if disaster strikes and you have to walk away from the car within a year (highly unlikely), you still spent less money than if you had bought a new car.
