Exterior Thermostat
I have a 1997 E320 and the thremostat for the exterior temp. goes off at time on the dash board.
At other times it reads 161F or some other odd reading that is incorect which seems to be effecting the way my climate control is working.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?

If The Combi Readout goes blank..then the Combi is defective..
If The readout seems off..then the outside temp sensor is defective
Most of the Time the Evap temp sensor is defective if the Climate control is working ..then quits..also you can trouble shoot the system through the A/C pushbutton..do a search on how to ..

The temperature sensor is in the black panel next to the driver's side fog light. It should look like a black pencil point sticking out of a little hole. If it isn't there, it is probably floating around the belly pan under the engine. The black panel may be broken and is easily replaced and not too expensive. The sensor is also easily replaced but was about $25 as I remember.

Just had from bumper work
I just had work done to the front bumper.
Do you think it could have been damaged at that time?
When you said under the fog light I asume you meant on the exterior of the car underneath

Yes, any repair to the front bumper could have cracked the black panel. This panel is in the bumper, next to the driver's side fog lamp. I was told that the most common cause of this is running the front bumper over a curb when parking head in. This presses the bottom of the bumper upward and can either crack the black panel or pops it out.
