Clearing Check Engine Error

Clearing Check Engine Error
I found a tread that explained the procedure for clearing error messages from the display. Something about turning the key to the on position and pushing a series of buttons and it clears the old messages from the console display.
I have a 1998 E430
Any help would be appreciated.
I do all my own work and the overdue for service message is displayed on startup I just want to get rid of it.
Thanks

The message that is being displayed is from your FSS. To reset the FSS do the following, First turn the ignition switch over to the number 2 position. Then, press the trip meter twice quickly to display the number of miles til next service. Next, turn the ignition switch back to the "0" position. Quickly press and hold the trip meter button while you turn the ignition back to the number 2 position. Continue holding the trip meter button in for about ten seconds and wait for the "beep." You then see the FSS meter reset itself for 10,000 miles. This method works for both my 1998 E320 and 1999 ML 320.
