My husband posted this in the technical forum but I thought you guys could help me better. Thanks!
....My 1998 E320 used to have tinted glass. When the tint was installed the high mount stop lamp was removed so the enitre window could be tinted. When the tint was removed it was just pulled out around this unit, leaving some shreds behind. I have tried to remove the unit to clean all of the old tint film out but I can't get it away from the glass. I was able to remove the rear cover and bulb carrier but cannot figure out how to get the base unit away from the glass.

Try this...
When I crawled into the trunk to fix a squeak in my E430's rear headrests, I recall seeing a tab under where the lamp assy. sits. That could be it. If you try that, the cover should just pop out. You'll have to pull/bend the front trunk liner out to get in there. It's just a couple of corner tabs and not too difficult. The hardest part was contorting my body to crawl in.
