'97 E300 - Infrared Sensor Troubles

The infrared sensor on my driver-side door works intermitently. The green LED actually looks a lot less green. Is there anyway to clean, replace or seal this "assembly". Maybe the LED/sensor can be replaced?

a little off topic but how far away does youre infrared unit work?

i have to be about 2 feet away from the door for it to unlock, and yes the batteries are good.

Mine has decent range, I've locked and unlocked from at least 10 feet away.

We've had a lot of rain here yesterday. I have a feeling that moisture finally started getting the best of it. I've noticed that with strong batteries, the range improves.

How do you know you batteries are good?

Depends on how old they are believe it or not.

On a side note, to make the LED surface look like new, peanut oil works wonders!

NOW what the heck can I do in regards to my problem?

I took a closer look to it and the plastic protecting the LED's has cracked.... Can just cover be replaced?

If you mean the plastic cover on the key, yes, but... not just that piece of plastic. I bought a used key on eBay and took the innerds out and replaced them with the one from my key.

I will do that for my other key, thanks for the tip. I was referring to the infrared sensor on the driver-side door handle.

I have the same problem with my 97 E420. My mechanic tells me that the entire door handle must be replaced which is too costly considering the age of the car.

same problem

I have the same problem with my driver side door sensor. It is complete cracked from stupid valet drivers shoving the key in there. Dealer quoted me in the 300's I said forget it. Since they are programed for the car- no used parts either.

I can live without it for another couple years until my C350 ;-)

I know the feeling, same thing occurred on my driver's door due to the clueless valets in SoCal. It works intermittently, usually fails after a car wash or rain. I am living with it but it is a pita at times not having key access to the driver's door especially when it is raining!
